Budgeting For A Vacation Or Trip
Most people mistakenly think that you need a lot of money to
travel, or that vacations are simply too expensive and lavish.
This is a good example of a wrongful assumption. Traveling
'light' so to speak, with limited cash, combined with a positive
attitude and a deep personal commitment, persistence and
resourcefulness is possible.
Simply put, planning pays and travel budgets save money. Taking
the extra time to review sources at your disposal prior to,
during and after your trip encourages a ...

The Attraction to Theme Parks
Amusement Business Magazine has revealed the top ten theme parks
in North America for 2004 based on attendance figures. As
expected, six of those ten are owned and operated by The Walt
Disney Company. Although no numbers were released for theme park
visitor count elsewhere, it's safe to assume that the brand also
dominates internationally, as its newest theme park HongKong
Disneyland just opened. Here is how the list looked with a short
overview of its attractions.
And don't forget to check out ...

Autumn in Del Mar is the Best Time of Year to Visit
Most people associate the beach with summer, and Southern
California's coastal gem, Del Mar, is no exception. Summer is
when the crowds come: school's out, the Del Mar Fair starts in
mid-June and shortly after the fair ends, the horses run at the
world-famous Del Mar Racetrack. The thoroughbred horse racing
season begins in mid July and goes through early September.
The hotels and motels are sold out, beach rentals are scarce and
expensive, the restaurants have one hour-plus waits, and ...

Zoo Use 101
Do you truly see animals at the zoo? A while back, on a visit to
the J. Paul Getty Museum in Santa Monica, I overheard a tour
guide say the average time spent looking at a work of art in the
museum is five to ten seconds per piece. At first this shocked
me. At the time I was standing entranced next to Van Gogh's
'Irises.' I envisioned museumgoers not even breaking their
stride as they blew past. Then I realized it was the "seer
syndrome." Sadly, most people who came here were seers of art,
not ...

There are plenty of reasons to head to the beach this December.
Luckily, the weather in Southern California is pretty nice in
the winter compared to most parts of the country. The following
Christmas and holiday events should help get you in the spirit
of the season, Southern California style.

Siberian Bus Rides - Getting Funky With Your Bad Self
Living in Siberia for a year allowed me to experience things I
never would have in San Diego. Getting funky with your bad self
on Siberian bus rides was one such thing.
Slip Sliding Away
The only real disadvantage to living in the Siberian city of
Chita was the lack of personal transportation. This was
particularly true during the winter when the temperature dropped
as low as 40 degrees below zero. That may sound a bit nippy, but
any negative temperature is relative. You really can't tell ...

Mexico Beaches - Puerto Vallarta and Ensenad
With shores on two oceans, Mexico is a beach lover's paradise.
Here's a primer on three of the beach areas, Puerto Vallarta and
Ensenada
Puerto Vallarta
Considered a poor man's Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta lies in the
middle of the Bahia de Banderas, a huge bay. The beach is long
and nice while the two lies at the foot of the Sierra Madre
Mountains. The last ten years have seen a lot of development
with condos, hotels and tourist support areas going up like mad.
This isn't particularly surprising ...

Costa Rica - VW Vans and Crawling Things
For better or worse, man has tamed Mother Nature in many
countries. My general impression is this isn't the case in Costa
Rica.
San Jose to Carrillo
Roughly ten of us had decided to head to Costa Rica for a week
to stay at a friend's place just outside the beach town of
Carrillo on the west coast. We flew into San Jose and were
supposed to be met by a rental company representative that had
two new VW vans for us.
As often happens in such situations, we weren't met by anyone
much less a person ...

Playing Chess in Russia - The Agony of Victory
Russians have a thing for chess and, frankly, are very good at
it. Being from San Diego, I thought chess was something you put
photo albums in.
Playing Chess
Playing chess requires thinking ten or twelve steps ahead. If I
wanted to understand the Russian mind, I had to learn to play
chess. If nothing else, it would be a good way to pass the time.
This I was told by Robert, an American living in the same town
as me.
I wasn't particularly excited about learning, but gave in one
day after ...

Monte Carlo - Paradise of a Different Sort
Monte Carlo is the city of glitz and over the top indulgence. I
had to see it for at least a day trip and ended up finding my
food paradise.
Monte Carlo Surprise
Monte Carlo is the where you go to see the pretty people. Well,
maybe not pretty, but definitely wealthy. I was loafing in Nice
for a few days and decided to join two travelers for a day trip
to Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is only a ten minute train ride from
Nice, so it seemed like the perfect day trip.
Monte Carlo is the kind of place ...

Ya Mule! - Backpacking In Siena, Italy
Ah, the glamour of backpacking through Europe. Of course, the
glamour comes with a price as I found in Siena, Italy.
Siena
Siena is located an hour or so outside of Florence, Italy. My
handy dandy guidebook suggested it was a side trip that just had
to be made. A medieval structure located behind protective walls
on the top of a hill. The central area was generally closed off
to cars and it was a taste of true Italy. Who was I to argue?
As I sat on the train, I check my backpack for any ...

Lost in Lagos, Portugal
Lagos is a small town in Portugal built on a large hill
overlooking the Mediterranean Ocean. While its old world charm
is evident during the day, it can be a real pain at night.
Upon arriving by train in Lagos, I quickly booked a bed in a
private home with a local family. I was loaded in a car and
driven to the home that was just over the crest of the hill on
which Lagos is built. From the home, it was about a mile down to
the beaches and water. Ah, good old exercise.
Being from San Diego, I ...

Portugal - Lisbon, Algarve and Lagos
On the southwestern tip of continental Europe, Portugal is an
old school country. In this article, we take a look at Lisbon,
Lagos and the Algarve.
Lisbon
Lisbon is the biggest city in Portugal and is located on the
Atlantic coast in middle of the country. I've been to Lisbon
three times, but only for a few days each time. Every time I
come away with the impression of elegance.
Arriving by train, your first taste of Lisbon is when you walk

Living In Siberia - Lenin's Revenge
In 1999, I moved to Chita, a city in Siberia, Russia to teach
for a year. After seven days of planes, trains and, well, more
trains, I was ready to experience Chita in all its glory.
Day 1 - Lenin's Revenge
Riding on a train for three plus days does weird things to your
equilibrium. You tend to develop a natural compensation for the
swaying. Unfortunately, your body doesn't just snap back when
you finally get on solid ground. As I stepped off the train, I
did this sort of forward, sort of ...

Starbright Hotel that was set up for this purpose two years ago.

Airline Travel Lingo! Does The Language Need An
With airline travel increasing in record numbers, more people
are experiencing the frustration of understanding the airlines
industry language, and leaving them feeling that they need an
interpreter for the travel information they're receiving from
the airline industry! It seems that air companies think that
every individual that flies should have to understand all that
travel Jargon they place on their flight reservations, and maybe
it's about time we figure out what they're talking ...

How To Pick Those Exotic Vacation Spots
I'm often asked how I find my "exotic" places for vacations.
It's actually pretty simple.
You can do it, too.
Basically, I stumble upon them. That's my secret.
The real key however, is that I always have my antennas up. I
look, I read, I surf, I listen. Then most of the time, something
just clicks and things fall into place. There's no requirement
for in-depth study. The trick is in keeping up the antenna.
First, look at the Sunday paper Travel section or supplement.
This section is always ...

Khabarovsk
Khabarovsk is an amazing city. Museums with works from Picasso,
Rembrandt and other masters. A bustling downtown area with
cafes, a lively music scene and architectural triumphs. Then
again, maybe not. We were far more interested in finding a hotel

Siberia, Russia Part 2 - Where Are We and What Day Is It?
Standing in the airport in San Diego, I began to wonder exactly
how long it was going to take to get to the city of Chita in
Siberia. The combination of a vodka hangover, three flights, one
train ride and a jump over the international date line didn't
help. At first glance, it looked like a total of two days, which
wasn't bad for going to the other side of the earth.
I should have paid more attention in math.
